Since the Gulf Hypoxia Action Plan was implemented in 2008, timelines for compliance have since changed, but states are slowly starting to implement their Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategies. Some municipalities have already started presenting industry timelines on when their phosphorus/nitrogen discharge limitation change will go into effect. Many of these discharge limitations have still yet to be determined.

With that said, chemical and physical removal of phosphorus in waste water is currently one of the dominating removal strategies.
